The Town of Hope Mills announced the death of retired Fire Chief Charles Steven Lopez, a department member for more than 30 years, Fire Marshal Bobby Carter said during the Nov. 3 board meeting.
"It is with great sadness that the town of Hope Mills announces the passing of retired and former fire chief Charles Steven Lopez," Carter said. The town said Lopez served most of his career as deputy fire chief and was elevated to fire chief in 2023, serving until his retirement in 2024.
According to the announcement, services will be held at McNeel Legacy Funeral Home at 319 West Broad Street, St. Paul's, North Carolina. A family visitation is scheduled for 2 p.m. with services beginning at 4 p.m. The town asked residents to keep the Lopez family in their prayers.
Lopez's decades of service were highlighted at the meeting as colleagues and town officials noted his leadership and commitment to public safety. The board did not announce additional memorial plans at the Nov. 3 session.
The town's public notice closed with a request for prayers for the Lopez family and recognition of his long service to the community.
