Springfield Township board approves weapon-detection system, security renewals and a high-capacity mower

Springfield Township School District’s board on April 7 approved a package of security, facilities and equipment contracts and a capital purchase that officials said will support safety and maintenance operations.
The board voted to approve a five-year agreement with Zero Eyes for AI-supported weapon detection and surveillance at about $37,260 per year, with an annual renewal option. The administration told the board it had gathered references from three neighboring districts using the technology and that training for security staff will be required. Board members asked about false positives and potential disruptions; the administration said the product’s accuracy has improved since prior reviews but acknowledged it is not perfect.
Also approved were renewals and contract actions discussed earlier in the property committee: a three-year renewal with Cardinal Point Group to provide security services (July 1, 2026–June 30, 2029); a custodial-services agreement with Campus Services Group for July 1, 2026–June 30, 2029; and an addendum extending the Environmental Control Systems contract through June 30, 2029.
The board authorized purchase of a Toro Groundsmaster 4000-D T4 and sunshade under Co-Stars contract #440028342. The agenda attachment lists the total price in a format that appears as '96,77360' in the meeting materials; the district described this as a single capital purchase intended to replace aging equipment and reduce field-maintenance labor. "With this one machine, we can cut an entire field," operations supervisor Mr. Watley said, explaining that the mower lets one operator complete work that previously required multiple staff.
At the property-committee level, Mr. Bray described a stop-arm bus-enforcement camera pilot that will place cameras on five buses April–June to gather data on safety and program effectiveness; no citations will be issued during the pilot. The committee also reviewed a fire-marshal report on a January middle-school electrical fire traced to degraded heat-trace cable; the district reported planned heat-trace replacements, upgrades to electrical protections and a districtwide preventative-maintenance program.
What’s next: the board approved the contracts and purchases by voice vote. The district said the stop-arm pilot’s initial findings will return to the property committee in May for next-step decisions.
