Board renews Summit Preparatory charter for five years after public support and staff review

The Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees on Nov. 13 voted unanimously to approve a five‑year renewal of Summit Preparatory Charter High School’s charter, adopting Resolution No. 004 2024‑2025.
Parents, students and staff spoke in favor of the renewal during public comment. Heather Logan, a parent, told the board Summit "is a necessary alternative for students who need a different kind of learning environment" and urged trustees to "please vote to continue Summit’s charter." A Summit student, Lil Andra, said the school gave her opportunities she otherwise would not have had and called Summit "a beacon of support" for students from lower‑income backgrounds.
Associate Superintendent Hansen summarized the district’s review of Summit’s renewal petition and said the charter was designated by the California Department of Education as a "middle performing" charter pursuant to Education Code sections 47605 and 47607.2. Staff identified clarification needs, worked with Summit representatives to revise the petition, and concluded that Summit meets minimum eligibility requirements for renewal. District staff recommended approval of a five‑year renewal from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030, and noted the parties will finalize an updated memorandum of understanding outlining fiscal and administrative responsibilities to be returned to the board for ratification.
After the public comments and staff presentation, a trustee moved to approve the renewal and the board carried the motion by unanimous roll call.
The district said it will bring an updated oversight and obligations memorandum of understanding to the board for ratification at a future meeting. The board did not discuss closing Summit or making findings that would justify nonrenewal during the public meeting.
