Newington board shortens 2025–26 student year and approves revised 2026–27 calendar amid public concern

Board members cited a combination of heavy snow days this winter and a growing number of observed holidays that pushed the instructional calendar later into June. During public comment, parent Amanda Mo urged the board to consider a “more balanced approach,” warning that "The increasing number of holidays and breaks is creating inconsistency and combined with unpredictable weather has now pushed the school year nearly to the end of June," and suggested surveying families and staff to identify widely observed holidays or the use of floating excuse days.
Following that discussion, the superintendent proposed a set of adjustments to the 2026–27 calendar. Major changes approved by the board included making the day before winter break a half day (not a full day), reducing professional‑learning (PL) half‑days from two per month to one, moving elementary and middle school conferences to November, and aligning high school conferences to dates that avoid conflicts with the SAT school‑day administration. The board also asked staff to publish a consolidated list of holidays that the district acknowledges and holidays it does not observe so families can plan.
The board chair noted that some tradeoffs are unavoidable: efforts to be inclusive of a diverse community’s holidays have lengthened the school year in some years, and a reduction in PL days could shift costs to substitute coverage or require teachers to attend after school on specified days. The revised 2026–27 calendar and a tentative 2027–28 calendar (with a projected last day of June 8, 2028) were both adopted by unanimous roll‑call votes. The board said it will consider additional community outreach and policy review on calendar decisions in the months ahead.
The formal motion to change the current year students’ last day, as recorded in the minutes, read: “I moved that the Newington Board of Education change the last day of school for students to Monday, June 22nd, 2026. The last day of school for teachers will remain Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026.” The motion passed unanimously in roll call.
