The superintendent said contractors will erect fences and staging and will focus initial work on the back side of the fifth‑grade wing and high, exterior siding. He advised the committee that snow days this winter compressed the planned construction window and could affect the contractor’s schedule.
On the proposed roof replacement, administrators and the architects reported an $11.8 million total project and said the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) initially indicated reimbursement of roughly 37% for eligible portions. The district learned MSBA will not reimburse a portion of the roof that is considered too new, producing a blended reimbursement nearer 33% for the full proposed scope; the superintendent said that would leave approximately $7 million to be borrowed by the district, a cost that would later be split between Chatham and Harwich under the regional agreement.
"It shouldn't be raining in a classroom," the superintendent said while explaining the urgency of replacing aging roofing and reinforcing the district’s case for submitting the full project to town meetings with MSBA reimbursement included.
Next steps are to begin the siding work, document underlying conditions as contractors open siding and to present the roof warrant at town meetings with supporting documentation and videos for voters’ review.
