Monomoy reviews two 2026–27 calendar options; main difference is pre‑ vs. post‑Labor Day start

Assistant Superintendent Robin Millan presented two draft 2026–27 school calendars to the school committee on March 12, 2026, and explained the calendars are identical except for their start and end dates.

"The only thing that's different between these two calendars is the start and the end date," Millan said, then described Option A (staff Aug. 26; students Sept. 1) and Option B (staff Sept. 2; students Sept. 8). Millan noted a longstanding contractual provision that makes the Friday before Labor Day a no‑school day in some years and said the union has previously agreed to adjustments to allow an earlier start. Administrators cautioned that starting later pushes the school year into late June and that the commissioner has set a hard end date (June 26) and the district can request at most a one‑day waiver for weather days.

Committee members discussed swapping the Dec. 23 full school day for another date to improve instructional continuity and asked for clarifying edits to the calendar graphics (color coding for first days, committee dates and half days). Millan said the calendar can be revised and returned for a final vote after administrators gather additional information from the district’s construction managers and the community.

The committee did not vote on a final calendar at the meeting and Millan said she expected the district to return with a final draft once construction impacts and contractor schedules are confirmed.
