Council praises first responders after flash storm; borough plans debris pickup and outreach

Council said there were no serious injuries in New Providence, though neighboring towns reported fatalities. The mayor said he contacted state and federal representatives to seek disaster assistance to support repair work and asked staff to pursue the federal declaration process.
Officials described forthcoming storm-debris pickup: public works staff will seek DEP permission to accept storm-material dumpsters at the recycling yard, and the borough will publish a GovPilot form for residents to request pickup and report storm damage. "Ralph is currently seeking permission from the D... and Denise reached out to GovPilot today to create a form for residents to go on where they'll tell us who they are and what they need to be picked up," a councilor said.
Residents at public comment praised first responders and asked whether the borough sent NP Alert messages during the storm; officials replied OEM personnel were actively responding in the field and that some alerting functions were constrained by response operations. Residents also raised concerns about accessibility and chamber audio quality during the meeting; officials said they would investigate improvements.
Council asked departments to evaluate mitigation options and review risk assessments to reduce future flood impacts and to coordinate outreach to residents on debris removal and assistance programs.
