Council to set Feb. 24 public hearing after introducing Hamilton Street SID budget; members discuss stop signs and parking limits

The Franklin Township Council on Jan. 27 introduced the 2026 Hamilton Street Special Improvement District (SID) budget and set a public hearing for Feb. 24, 2026.
The introduction occurred by motion, which the council moved, seconded and approved by roll call. The township presented the SID budget as the body prepares to hold a public hearing and hear comments before any adoption vote.
Separately during council comments, members raised safety concerns at the intersection of Home Street and Hamilton Street, describing limited sightlines and parked cars that obscure drivers’ views. Council members said Hamilton Street is a county-owned roadway and that the township will coordinate with the Somerset County traffic division about installing stop signs on all approaches and adding no-parking markings near the corner to reduce crash risk, particularly where children cross.
At the meeting the council also discussed short-term mitigations such as painting curbs and installing reminder signage about required parking distances from corners; staff were directed to investigate and report back.
Next steps: a public hearing on the Hamilton Street SID budget is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2026; council members said they will follow up with county officials about the intersection safety measures before bringing any ordinance or traffic changes back to the council.
