Council approves Michael Nomac as director of licenses, permits and inspections amid same transparency objections

The New Britain Common Council on Aug. 28 approved the mayor’s nomination of Michael Nomac as director of licenses, permits and inspections, following the same interview-and-panel process described for the earlier public-health appointment.
Alderman Smith introduced the resolution and Alderman Gibson seconded. The nomination was supported by several members and opposed by Alderwoman Scott, who repeated objections about transparency: she said council members did not receive résumés in advance and that finalizing department-head hires near a change in administration is inappropriate. Corporation Counsel Bizaro answered that the charter does not impose automatic term limits on department-head appointments and that a department head may be removed for cause through the process set out in the charter.
Council members who had participated in interviews said both caucuses were invited to attend and that candidate materials had been circulated among leadership and caucus members after interviews. After a call for the question, the council voted to confirm Nomac; Alderman Scott was recorded as opposed. The meeting adjourned at 6:38 p.m.
