Beaver City Council discusses July 4 plans, capital projects, parking and delinquent utility accounts

At the April 28 meeting the Beaver City Council touched on community events, capital projects and several administrative items.

Mayor Matt Robinson confirmed Beaver City will hold an evening July 4 celebration at the Tushar Complex with fireworks already purchased; the Ben Mathews band is scheduled and Craig Wright is lined up to execute the fireworks. Council Member Lance Cox raised a fire-hazard concern about allowing public fireworks at the reservoir this year and suggested limiting public discharge to designated locations; Council Member Randy Hunter volunteered to coordinate event logistics and Mayor Robinson said he would handle hot dogs for the event.

City Manager Monte Hawkins updated the council on FY27 capital projects, reporting near-complete work on the hydropower plant, sewer lagoon project, city center pavilion and sidewalk and meter structure. He presented a five-year capital list that includes the Manderfield highway project, a new city center and recreation facilities and said the council should review the capital list quarterly rather than only at budget time.

City Attorney Justin Wayment reported the city has several delinquent utility accounts, some in the $900-to-more-than-$2,000 range, and proposed sending a final-warning letter to delinquent account holders and pursuing small claims for nonresponsive accounts; the council raised no objection. Wayment also said CenturyLink has not responded to city letters about pole attachments and recommended the city perform a pole count to document attachments if legal action becomes necessary.

The council then conducted multiple closed sessions later in the evening; no actions resulted from those closed sessions and the meeting adjourned at 7:39 p.m.
