Somerville council introduces $29.7 million 2026 municipal budget; proposes $27 average municipal tax rise

Paige, the borough finance presenter, reviewed the 2026 municipal budget at the March 16 council meeting and the governing body voted to introduce the document for public review.

The budget overview presented to the council listed total revenues of $29,743,000 and the planned use of about $5.2 million of surplus. The presentation noted $4.9 million in pilot revenues for the borough with $443,000 in new pilot revenue anticipated, and a fully funded capital program of roughly $2.3 million for items including library roof replacement, Borough Hall HVAC work, DPW equipment and police body-worn camera purchases.

Paige said the proposed municipal tax impact on an average assessed home (presented as $276,000 assessed value in the slides) would be an increase of roughly $27 per year. The presenter and council emphasized a conservative fiscal approach and continued use of pilot revenues and shared services with neighboring municipalities to manage costs.

Council members thanked finance staff for the work and moved to introduce the municipal and user-friendly budget documents; the motion to introduce passed by roll call. Staff indicated the legal budget documents and the presentation will be posted on the borough website the following day for public review.
