Farmers Branch senior advisory board schedules 2027 event dates, reviews programs and renovation updates

The Farmers Branch Senior Advisory Board met in April and approved two target dates for major events in 2027 while reviewing programming, volunteer recruitment and renovation needs at the senior center.

Board members agreed to hold the two 2027 events on Sept. 11 and March 20, a motion that was made, seconded and approved by a show of hands. The board also unanimously approved the minutes of the March 5, 2025 meeting earlier in the session.

Members spent much of the meeting reporting on recent and upcoming activities: attendees praised a recent large event and several members described social outings including a casino trip and a game night. One member reported attending the March 17 grand reopening of Dutch Village Park and encouraged others to visit the renovated park. The board also heard that a senior member plans to donate boxes of movies to expand selections for the recurring 'Big Screen Bash' movie series.

Programming updates included a schedule of April offerings: a probate/will seminar on April 9, a Medicare-changes seminar on April 30, the Metro Crest mobile food bank visit on April 13 and a Discovery Center trip on April 29. Members noted ongoing scholarship interviews for local high-school students organized by the Farmers Branch women’s group and the civic league.

Under subcommittee reports, members discussed the spotlight award nomination process and clarified that the award recognizes exceptional volunteers affiliated with the Branch Connection program; nominations are considered in January and July. The social program series lead said Debbie Hall will leave the board in June and that 'Ever' will replace her on the social events committee.

The renovation committee reported maintenance work unrelated to the larger renovation project, citing wear-and-tear cleanup, a few electrical issues and a dishwasher that needs attention. Members said the construction team (Rudd) shared that the renovation project won an award; the board discussed scheduling repairs to the ballroom floor.

A member suggested reviewing a smaller casino night hosted by the "Carolton Police Alumni Association" as a possible model for future events; the transcript reports their expenditures were "like six grand," a figure the speaker said they would verify. The board also discussed recruitment strategies for upcoming board openings and outreach via city channels.

The board confirmed the meeting calendar through November: May through November meetings will occur the first Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m., and the December meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. for the holiday celebration. A year review will be presented to city council in November on a date to be determined. The meeting adjourned after a motion to adjourn passed.
