School names committee forwards lists for two new elementary schools in Rancho Cordova and South Elk Grove

The Elk Grove Unified School Names Committee presented shortlisted options for two upcoming elementary schools and described its process to the board.
Dr. Coats outlined the committee’s charge and said the committee met beginning in May to evaluate nominations against board policy requiring elementary names to reflect district diversity, local history or contributions to education. For Grant Line 208 in the Rancho Cordova area the committee forwarded three names: Lester Holt Elementary School, Cypress Grove Elementary School and Golden Oak Elementary School. For the Arbor Ranch site in South Elk Grove the committee forwarded four options: Glenn Brunswick, Dennis Bucher, Ivet Rowlette and Poppy Ridge elementary schools.
Committee members who participated in public comment highlighted the diversity of nominees and urged the board to consider community connections when selecting a final name. Lewis SA, a committee member, and Richard Padella described the deliberative process and emphasized historic preservation and local ties as key criteria.
Board members asked clarifying questions about outreach and whether the committee had attempted to contact living individuals or families when proposing eponymous names; staff said they would attempt outreach before a final recommendation.
The board took no final action; staff will return with a recommendation and additional outreach results in September or October.
