New Providence students pitch Unity Day for June 7

Four New Providence High School students — Audrey, Fatima, Angel and Lillian — presented plans for the borough’s 2025 Unity Day to the council on the evening the meeting opened. The students said the event will take place Saturday, June 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the New Providence High School gym and will include more than 20 booths run by school clubs and local cultural groups.
"Unity Day truly represents what we can accomplish when we come together as one New Providence community," Audrey said, describing a program of interactive booths, calligraphy and art stations, and a passport challenge for younger attendees to collect stamps and stickers at activity booths.
Council President Lisa told the students the borough would promote the event on official channels and noted the council planned to present a proclamation at the May 27 meeting. Students said past Unity Days had been held at the Berkeley Heights YMCA and Centennial Park but that holding the event in the high school gym avoids weather problems and allows more activities.
Organizers said the event will include school groups such as the Spanish honor society, the diversity club and the French and chess clubs, as well as community partners including local cultural schools and organizations. Flyers with event details were made available in the council chamber.
The council thanked the students for organizing the event and invited residents to attend.
