Board recognizes educators, musicians and esports champions at May meeting

The Rio Rancho Public Schools board honored staff and student achievements including an NMSBA award for Tasha Young, Cleveland High School Wind Symphony’s state win and Rio Rancho Cyber Academy’s first state esports title.
At its May 11 meeting the Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education paused regular business to recognize staff and students for recent accomplishments.
The board presented an NMSBA student achievement award to Tasha Young. Presenters described Young as organized, dependable and a clear facilitator of data and adult learning; Young thanked colleagues, her RADA team and family.
The board also recognized the Cleveland High School Wind Symphony, director Daniel Holmes and associate band director Josh Dumas for earning first place in the NMAA state concert band contest (5A), outperforming 11 other bands. Dr. Kurt Schmidt, executive director of fine arts, praised the musicianship and the district’s feeder programs.
Julie Arnold, principal of Rio Rancho Cyber Academy, and Mr. Figueroa celebrated Cyber Academy’s first state title in esports and named game titles the team competes in, including Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, Rocket League, Overwatch, League of Legends and Madden. The board congratulated students and coaches and invited board members to visit the programs.
The recognitions preceded the business portion of the meeting and drew brief board remarks thanking staff and students for their work.
