Baker said the budget shows “total revenue of approximately $256,000,000” with the state equalization guarantee (SEG) at about $240,000,000 and a beginning fund balance near $13,000,000. He told the board the budget reflects steps taken to cover an estimated $800,000 transportation shortfall and about $1,800,000 shortfall for instructional materials, and that the district used targeted reductions and staffing reviews to close an overall gap. The motion to adopt the 2026–27 budget passed by voice vote; the board recorded the motion as carried 5–0.
On a separate item, the board approved a restructuring proposal for Independence High School that adds instructional time and supports aimed at raising graduation outcomes. Jessica Sanchez, principal of Independence High School, told the board the plan includes extending the school day by one hour, adding monthly Saturday sessions (roughly 10 additional days when summed across the year) and launching three‑week coaching cycles and weekly data teams to provide proactive student supports. The board moved and approved the restructuring proposal; the superintendent and president were asked to sign assurances to finalize state paperwork.
Dr. Kurt Schmidt presented the district’s Fine Arts Education Act (FAEA) application and the board approved the application. Schmidt explained the district’s student count and formula: a reported 7,980.5 student count, an FAEA multiplier of 0.055 producing 438.928 units and a unit value of $7,117.10, yielding roughly $3,000,000 in FAEA funding to support elementary fine arts positions, stipends, materials and partnerships.
The board also voted to approve Resolution 25‑013 permitting membership in multiple purchasing cooperatives (including Omni Partners, TIPS USA, BuyBoard, Choice Partners and Sourcewell) so the district may use vetted cooperative contracts as an additional procurement method.
