At its June session the Apple Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees reported closed‑session actions and approved several items in open session, including personnel appointments, student discipline outcomes and an increase to trustee pay.
The board reported that, on motions made and seconded in closed session, it appointed Christie De Debasco as assistant principal at Mariana Elementary (range 7, column 5; effective July 1) and appointed Jamie Hjge as assistant principal at Phoenix Academy (range 7, column 1; effective July 1). Both appointments were announced upon reconvening in public session.
The board also announced it unanimously voted to accept and pay a claim by Nicholas Garrett (litigation/claim acceptance reported under Government Code authorities cited in the closed‑session notice).
On student discipline the board approved multiple expulsion recommendations and stipulated expulsion cases for the 2023–24 year and an expulsion decision for case number 10 (2022–23). Motions for those matters were made, seconded and recorded as approved by the board.
One notable governance action: the board approved an increase to trustee compensation beyond the limit in Education Code Section 3510, approving a 5% raise effective July 1, 2024. Trustees discussed the change and the clerk recorded the new monthly compensation rising from $420 to $441.
Other routine business: the board approved certificated and classified personnel actions (including corrected PC numbers and employment amendments), adopted Resolution 2324–24 regarding committed Fund 14 balance, amended the meeting calendar to shorten a scheduled closed session, and approved the consent list of items 1 through 32.
Procedural notes: motions were moved and seconded in the public record (several motions were identified in the transcript as moved by Amanda Buchanan and seconded by Maria Okara or Gary Ry), and the clerk recorded votes as “all in favor” where stated. Several actions were preceded by closed‑session consideration per the agenda.
What happens next: appointments take effect July 1; expulsions and personnel actions are in the minutes; the district will proceed with budget and LCAP follow‑up as described in the budget presentation.
