Coalition for Safe Communities presents youth safety programs to council

Perry Ma described a ‘Team Summit’ that brings students from 10 area high schools to govern themselves and discuss issues affecting them; he said the coalition’s photography program emphasizes a metaphorical approach that has attracted attention from the Attorney General’s office. "What we do keep kids off the streets," he said, listing community walks, cookouts, community gardens and partnerships among police, schools and faith-based groups.
Ma said the coalition recently restarted a community effort in a nearby city and is addressing teen and intergenerational issues through those partnerships. He described the goal as building a shared sense of safety by bringing students, seniors, neighbors, churches and law enforcement to the same table.
The presentation was introductory in nature; council members thanked Ma and invited further collaboration. No formal action or funding decision was taken at the meeting.
