Health District Presents $375,000 to RBUSD; Washington Elementary Showcases Full-Day Kindergarten

Beach Cities Health District representatives briefed the Redondo Beach Unified School District board on the 2023-24 School District Health Report and upcoming school health initiatives and presented a $375,000 school-service agreement to the district.
Ali Stewart, chief partnership development officer at Beach Cities Health District, summarized three health-priority areas (substance-use prevention, physical and brain health, and public health and safety), highlighted programs including Live Well Kids and garden- and restorative-justice-based diversion services, and described upcoming outreach events (a COVE open house and Cove Fest). Stewart said the district partnership supports fentanyl-awareness screenings, social-media/screen-time presentations and other preventive programs across RBUSD.
The board accepted a ceremonial check of $375,000 to support school-service programming. Stewart said the amount reflects an ongoing partnership and the organization's commitment to programs at all eight elementary schools.
Separately, Washington Elementary principal Dr. Alyssa Ogrady and kindergarten teachers described the districtwide move to full-day kindergarten this year (regular schedule Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:15 a.m.-1:45 p.m., shortened Wednesdays), reviewed curriculum materials used (Foundations, Benchmark Adelante, Eureka Math, Reflections social studies, ELD for English learners), and showed a short slideshow and student testimonials about the expanded day. Teacher Melissa Smith thanked the board for full-day implementation, calling the extra time "the gift of time" for instruction and social-emotional learning.
The board praised staff, recognized teacher Jeff Watts with a brief video tribute, and congratulated newly introduced Lincoln Elementary principal Dr. Christine Kim.
The district said the health report will be available on the Beach Cities Health District and RBUSD websites.
