Cheryl Tagashi, coordinator in the district's categorical programs department, opened the District Advisory Council's first meeting of the 2025–26 year and reviewed the packet of materials provided to attendees, including the agenda, the slide presentation, minutes from the May 8 meeting, the district's uniform complaint procedures, and the DAC bylaws.
"The mission of our DAC is to promote excellence in the education for all students through a broadbased community representation," Tagashi said, explaining that the council advises the superintendent and school board on how to use federal and state categorical funds such as Title I and the Local Control and Accountability Plan.
Tagashi described how members are chosen: school site councils nominate and elect parent, staff and student representatives, who then may serve as the school's DAC representative or alternate. She told attendees that DAC meetings are held monthly between September and May and that attendees should use the provided "burning question" form to register items for the public Q&A portion.
During the meeting the council approved the May 8, 2025 minutes on a motion by Sally Garcia and a second by Ara; the motion carried (vote tally not provided). Tagashi also reviewed hybrid meeting norms for asking questions, making motions, and voting by in-person hand counts and virtual raised hands.
Members were encouraged to take DAC summary reports back to their school site councils and to contact district staff if they did not receive emailed materials. Tagashi said the DAC helps shape agendas by identifying topics parents want to hear about, from the LCAP annual update to presentations required by federal funding rules.
The meeting closed with reminders to use the question form for personal or sensitive matters and that staff would be available after the session for individual follow-up.
