Board honors students, volunteers and extracurricular programs; public comment highlights new middle-school wrestling initiative

The Milpitas Unified School District board opened its meeting with multiple recognitions for students and volunteers and heard public comments introducing a new middle-school wrestling program.
The board thanked Love Milpitas volunteers and student leader Ununice Lee for campus beautification projects at Curtner, Rose and Weller elementary schools. Lee told the board the effort has mobilized hundreds of volunteers: "We want to love our neighbors by beautifying our community," she said.
The board also recognized Milpitas High students who earned seats in the San Jose State Honor Band and celebrated the speech and debate team's national tournament, which funds the program's operating budget. Trustees presented "Made in MUSD" awards and praised staff members and activities leaders, including the MHS leadership program and its signaled outcomes for student engagement.
During the public-comment period, coach Roberto Clemente described a new middle-school wrestling collaboration for Rancho and Russell middle schools that will start this October and culminate in a November 1 dual meet; he said the program is free for participants and aims to grow youth participation by using junior coaches and community volunteers. Parents and student coaches shared brief remarks about confidence-building and leadership gains.
Student reporters from the MHS Union newspaper told trustees they were attending to report on district updates and invited the board to recommend topics for student journalists. The recognitions and public comments underscored the board's emphasis on student activities and community partnerships during the evening.
