Milpitas Unified trustees approved two change orders (Nos. 13 and 14) for the Milpitas High School Performing Arts Center at a regular board meeting.
District project staff explained the change orders: one authorizes a separate electrical service and panel plus a fire pump to provide required water pressure to the high stage area, a change driven by fire-life safety and utility requirements; the other covers technology and data upgrades that were recommended after construction began. Project staff said the electrical feed required fire-rated wiring and that the prime subcontractor had delayed submitting costs; the district negotiated the electrical costs down by roughly $25,000.
Board members asked whether the change orders would affect the project timeline or contingency. Staff replied that the change orders add cost but do not change the January target ribbon-cutting; contingency for the project stands at about 7.5 percent of the project budget. One board member asked for a post-completion report outlining challenges and lessons learned.
The board approved both change orders by unanimous voice vote with no abstentions noted in the room.
