Two SOCORRO ISD elementary schools — Cactus Trails Elementary School and Sergeant Roberto Elementary School — were recognized as top performers in the region by the Council on Regional Economic Expansion and Educational Development and were awarded cash gifts for faculty and staff, an agency official said.
The district representative said the recognitions were based on STAR and EOC exam results and presented several districtwide distinctions as context for the awards. "We've been receiving lots of recognitions uh based on our our our STAR performance, EOCC performance. We are the highest scoring school district in the entire region. We're uh one of only three STEM certified school districts in in the entire nation. We're the largest school district in the entire state to receive the postsecary distinction designation," the agency official said, attributing those accolades to the district's test performance and staff efforts.
The official also described student achievement rates cited by the district: "Over 60% of those students that took the exam have accomplished completing that exam at the meet or grade level," they said, referring to reading and mathematics testing for elementary grades 3 through 5. The official emphasized broad staff contributions, noting custodians, food service workers, counselors and nurses as part of the district's support system.
A staff member who spoke later at the ceremony framed the recognition as validation of daily work and a boost to students' prospects. "It means a difference with every single student that walks in the door every day. And I think it's a reflection upon the entire staff," the staff member said, adding that the award "recognizes every single person in the building."
The ceremony awarded cash gifts to faculty and staff at the two elementary schools named by the district. The presentation did not record a formal vote or action by an elected body; it was an awards ceremony and announcement of recognitions and distinctions by the district representative.
