Staff told the council the city received four applications totaling $169,712 while last year's grant budget was $90,500; staff recommended awarding up to $90,500. During discussion a council member proposed pulling $15,000 from the sponsorship line in the proposed budget to expand the grant pool. That proposal and the resulting allocations were moved and approved by roll call.
Council members praised the community organizations' work and said the annual grant process clarifies how sponsorship requests will be handled going forward. "We do this once a year and you can put in for it next year," one council member said, explaining staff and council preference to handle community requests through the annual grant process rather than ad hoc sponsorships.
Motion text recorded: award funding in the following amounts: $7,500 to KMS Foundation; $90,500 to Friends of Herriman; $7,500 to South Valley Performing Arts. Vote: unanimous approval by roll call (affirmative votes recorded for Jared, Teddy, Matt, Tara and the mayor).
