Commissioners discussed multiple resident complaints and operational issues at the Alta Vista pickleball courts and directed staff to look into low‑cost safety dividers, guest/day‑pass options and reservation-system improvements.
Commissioner Galati summarized two resident emails: one requesting a day pass for out‑of‑town guests who currently must pay a full membership fee, the other describing a safety concern where balls cross between adjacent courts. "The balls tend to sort of migrate from the two courts over here to the two courts over there," Galati said, describing photographs showing patrons using bags or a turned trash can to block ball movement. Galati recommended the city consider inexpensive, lightweight movable screens that are roughly net height. She asked Director Orta to investigate costs and implementation.
Commissioners and staff also noted an operations issue: some users cannot cancel reservations online and must call the office to delete bookings. One commissioner asked staff to report back with three months of usage data, including reservation counts, membership and revenue, to evaluate return on investment for the courts.
What was agreed: The commission requested staff follow up on (1) feasibility and cost of movable court dividers/screens, (2) changes to allow online reservation cancellations, and (3) possible options for guest/day passes or rate adjustments for out‑of‑area visitors. Commissioners asked for usage and revenue data at the next meeting to assess impacts.
