Superintendent reports positive fiscal outlook and staffing push after override

Deputy Superintendent Susan Givens told the school committee on May 13 that the district is making progress reconciling the FY27 budget after the recent override and is actively hiring.
Givens said the district has completed work on RIF notices and both voluntary and involuntary transfer considerations and that, because the override passed, many positions that had been held open will now be filled. "We have about over 30 open positions, professional positions right now," she said, adding the district is processing more than 400 hires for summer programs and is coordinating transportation and staffing to be in place before the school year.
Givens also described the reconciliation work ahead: accounting for retirements, transfers, tuition and transportation adjustments and finalizing a reconciled FY27 budget for upload into the district's Munis financial system in time for the start of the year.
Several members thanked Givens for the work, noting hiring is late in the season but expressing optimism that needed positions will be filled soon.
