Parent tells ABC Unified board Nemis Elementary changed dress code with little notice, cites communication and recess concerns
Summary
A Nemis Elementary parent urged the board to address lack of timely communication and abrupt dress-code enforcement; she said changes posted Aug. 9 came fewer than 72 hours before school and that some students were denied recess for alleged violations.

Karina salido, a parent of a fourth grader at Nemis Elementary, asked the board to investigate sudden dress-code changes and uneven communication from school leaders.
"Once the gates opened on the first day of school we were told by the school principal that only students would be allowed on campus," Salido said, describing crying children and chaotic drop-off. She said the principal later sent an apology message to only some families and that a written change to the dress code posted Aug. 9 — "less than 72 hours before the first day of school" — limited jeans, yoga pants and sweatpants.
Salido told trustees she believed Nemis was the only ABC school using uniforms and that selective enforcement left some families unaware of rules and facing punishments. "Parents have voiced their concerns regarding the dress code and are essentially told that the dress code cannot be enforced," she said, and added that she knew of at least three instances where students lost recess for alleged dress-code violations.
Salido said she had contacted school administration and director Dr Lozano on Aug. 16 and was told she would be contacted by the principal; she told the board that follow-up had not occurred.
Board members thanked Salido for bringing the concerns. Dr Lozano said staff would follow up and that administrators would work on clarifying communications and next steps for the family.
Public comment closed and the board proceeded to other business.
