Gilroy board adopts governance handbook, approves multiple facilities contracts and vehicle purchases

The Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education unanimously adopted a revised Board Governance Handbook and approved multiple facilities and procurement actions at its Oct. 17 meeting.
Vice President Fock led discussion on edits to the handbook—typo corrections, reordering language under Unity of Purpose and removal of a clause suggesting board attendance at routine staff development—before trustees agreed on final wording and approved the resolution by roll call.
The board also approved a slate of facilities and maintenance contracts and purchases. Director of Maintenance Mr. Nato described perimeter-fence projects at Rod Kelly and El Roble (7-foot ornamental fencing, designed to avoid Division of the State Architect triggers for taller structures), topographic and underground-utility surveys at multiple sites, playground installations for Rod Kelly and Elliott elementary schools, and related ground-penetrating radar work to avoid underground utilities prior to fence-post installation. The board voted unanimously to authorize the contracts after staff confirmed vendor prequalification and reference checks.
Managers said the district will replace several aging maintenance vehicles because many units are from the mid-2000s and parts are no longer available. The maintenance department requested five vehicles including vans and tow-capable trucks and proposed enclosed trailers to secure equipment and support new electric charging workflows; trustees approved the procurement on consent.
Board members said they appreciated the oversight committee’s positive audit of bond measure expenditures and asked staff to ensure routine project oversight continues. The board authorized staff to solicit bids for a district warehouse modification project and approved a change order for Pelican (HVAC/CO2-monitoring) thermostat integration under the CalSHAPE grant; staff said further CalSHAPE phases would depend on grant awards.
