Lake Dallas ISD honors students and staff for athletics, arts, academics and a life-saving response

At its March 23 meeting the Lake Dallas ISD Board of Trustees recognized student leaders, band and theater qualifiers, art and athletic accomplishments and teachers and staff of the year; a Shady Shores teacher was honored for performing the Heimlich to save a child.
The Lake Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees spent a large portion of its March 23 meeting recognizing student and staff accomplishments across the district.
Jessica Bovan, Lake Dallas Middle School principal, introduced the Student Advisory Council and said the group's feedback led to changes in breakfast seating and lunchtime procedures. "By sharing their perspectives...they help us continue improving both academics and campus culture," Bovan said.
Jamie Roach, the girls basketball coach, presented the middle-school team's season results and praised the players' character. "We had a 12-and-1 record," Roach said, noting the team scored 618 points as a unit. Roach identified Chloe Davis as the team's top scorer with 373 points.
At the high school level, Jennifer Rios announced that junior Raeka Daily had artwork accepted into the Texas Art Education Association Youth Art Month exhibition at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Melissa Champ, the high school theater teacher, described students who earned Texas Thespian recognition and named several students on the President's and Vice President's lists for academic performance.
Band director Michaela Paler reported that 33 students qualified for the UIL State Solo and Ensemble competitions and will travel to Austin over Memorial Day weekend; she listed ensemble members and soloists and called the level of participation "very impressive."
Jennifer Bryant, principal at Shady Shores Elementary, asked the board to recognize Estrella (Mrs.) Tovar, a teacher who performed back blows and the Heimlich when a student choked on Feb. 12. Bryant read a parent letter praising Tovar's "quick thinking, calm demeanor, and willingness to step in without hesitation," and said Dr. Brown summed up the district's view: "Mrs. Tovar's actions reflect exactly the kind of care, attentiveness, and calm professionalism we hope every child experiences in our schools."
The board also announced teachers, paraprofessionals and employees of the year across campuses, naming honorees including Christina Sukys (Corinth Elementary Teacher of the Year), Oliver Jones (Teacher of the Year), Kelsey Starkey, Claudia Gill, Griselda Becerra, Ashley Hathaway (Lake Dallas High School Teacher of the Year), Holly Jones (paraprofessional), Jason Starr (first-year teacher), and Brandon Wilson (custodian). Speakers noted each honoree was nominated by peers and described examples of their classroom and campus leadership.
The recognitions concluded with photos and applause; the board then moved on to other district business.
