Interview committee recommends Rebecca Payne for Commission on Sustainability and Resilience

The Bloomington City interview committee voted unanimously to recommend Rebecca Payne to the full City Council for appointment to seat C3 on the Commission on Sustainability and Resilience.

Rebecca Payne, who identified herself during the meeting as an applicant and a health and human sciences educator with Purdue Extension, described a mix of planning and public-health experience and said she applied because she is "civic-minded" and wants to help pass on an environment where her children and others "can thrive." Payne said she has worked with municipalities, has a background in urban planning and public health, and has experience with park interpretation and community outreach.

Payne told the committee she sees political polarization and skepticism about science as key obstacles to local sustainability work. "There are a lot of deniers out there," she said, adding that education and evidence-based outreach are how she would try to bridge divides. She also raised concerns about microplastics and described pursuing vetted scientific information as central to her approach.

Members asked about logistics and time commitments. Committee members said the commission meets the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with subcommittees on topics such as waste reduction, transportation and housing. Payne said she could commit to the schedule and noted occasional fall conflicts associated with family obligations.

After the interview, Council Member Sydney Zul moved to recommend Payne's appointment; Council Member Isabelle Petemont Smith seconded and the committee approved the recommendation by voice vote. The committee will forward the recommendation to the full City Council, which will vote on the appointment at a later meeting.

The committee also told Payne that she should expect follow-up from deputy clerk Jennifer Cross about next steps and timing for the full-council vote.
