West Orange board implements tutorial program to target math scores and unanimously approves personnel, curriculum and finance items

The West Orange Board of Education on Dec. 16 approved the implementation of a district tutorial program designed to help students struggling in mathematics and, by separate unanimous roll calls, adopted personnel, curriculum and finance resolutions.
President Rock said the board had earlier approved the creation of tutorial positions and that the Dec. 16 meeting advanced implementation: "we've approved the actual implementation of that," she said, calling the action evidence the district is "moving in the right direction" on math supports. Superintendent Moore said the district is developing interventions and supports and that more concrete plans are expected in the first quarter of the year.
The board approved Personnel items A1–A6 in a motion by Mr. Stevenson, seconded by Mr. Ifer; Miss Flowers recorded a roll call of Dr Bryant (yes), Mr Ifer (yes), Mr Stevenson (yes), Vice President Vera (yes) and President Rock (yes). The personnel packet included retirements: Elizabeth Ramos, school nurse at Edison Middle School; FAL Khan, night shift custodian at Hazel Elementary; and Bettyanne Sugy, clerical aide at West Orange High School.
Curriculum and instruction items B1–B4 were approved in a separate motion moved by Mr. Stevenson and seconded by Mr. Ifer, and finance and special services/business office items were later approved following the same procedure. The board also approved reports D1–D2.
Superintendent Moore gave the HIB (harassment, intimidation and bullying) update, saying the district reviewed seven investigations since the last meeting and determined none met HIB criteria, a conclusion he said matched the findings of the district anti‑bullying specialists.
Board members emphasized parent engagement and school‑level visits as part of the strategy to raise achievement. Dr. Bryan reported the curriculum committee spent a lengthy session reviewing "building blocks" for addressing the math concern and said the initial ideas felt promising but more detail will follow.
The board announced its next meeting will be a Jan. 6, 2025 reorganization meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the West Orange High School library/media center.
