Board refers outdated noise ordinance to ordinance committee after resident request

At the Sept. meeting the Board of Selectmen voted to refer the town’s noise ordinance to the ordinance committee after a resident requested an update to rules last revised in 1983. The complaint came from a resident, Michael Chavez of Osprey Drive, who asked the board to modernize the ordinance to reflect current standards.
Board members agreed the ordinance language was outdated and discussed how the police department’s sound-level equipment and related training would be a consideration in any update. One selectperson said the department “has the equipment” but that the town should make sure officers are trained and the policy gives them guidance on its use.
The board deferred scheduling a full ordinance-committee review until its second October meeting so the tax incentive subcommittee can continue its agenda. The referral passed on a motion (mover: Trish, second: Teresa) and the board recorded the motion as carried.
Next steps: the ordinance committee is to schedule a review of the 1983 text, consider modern noise-level standards and training needs for the police department, and return recommendations to the board.
