The committee reviewed the draft application form and discussed eligibility and timing. “Applications open March 30th and close May 22nd,” the chair said, summarizing the timeline that members approved. Committee members stressed the need for sufficient lead time so more students can apply; one member recommended keeping the open period longer than previously used to avoid a repeat of last year’s low turnout.
Members clarified that the award is presented to a graduating senior who lives in Miami Lakes or attends a Miami Lakes school and that GPA and hours of community service will be considered though no minimum thresholds were added. The draft application fields listed in the meeting include name, address, email, phone, school, unweighted and weighted GPA, community-service hours, counselor contact, parent contact information, activities (up to 10 entries), a mandatory unofficial transcript and optional resume, plus the two letters of recommendation and the 350-word personal statement.
The committee discussed whether juniors should be eligible; the group said the award will target graduating seniors for the 2025–2026 school year. Members also agreed to allow a special meeting or a short call if necessary to finalize awardees before the council presentation.
Next steps: the task force will finalize the application language, circulate it to applicants by email and social media, and request a presentation slot with the council for the June meeting to present the winner.
