Public feedback planned for convention-center art; private Soma mural finalist reported

Commissioners received an update on public-art work tied to the city’s convention-center expansion and were told the Capital Improvement Board-led public-art process will include public feedback sessions and interviews.
Christina El reported most artists completed site visits and that proposals for the CIB-managed public-art component are due on the 10th, with interviews scheduled afterward. Jane Cooperson said staff plan a survey link and community pop-ups—tentative farmers-market tabling—to gather public feedback once the CIB subcommittee finalizes materials.
Commissioners also discussed a separate, privately led mural call for an exterior retaining-wall near the new Soma location in the Trades District. Meeting participants said Indiana University is handling the funding and contracting for that mural and that a finalist has been selected; the project and contract remain subject to IU’s approvals. Meeting remarks named Bob Costello as the property owner who invited community members to participate in the selection process.
Christina emphasized the commission’s advisory role on the convention-center art element. "Our role is only to advise. We're not picking," she said.
The public-art subcommittee will meet on a new schedule (second Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.) and staff asked commissioners to help promote public-feedback events when materials are posted. Staff will share finalized materials and public-feedback dates after the CIB subcommittee completes its plan.
