San Juan EDC approves sponsorships for local youth and disability programs

The Boys & Girls Club representative, who addressed the board during the festival sponsorship discussion, said the local club serves "130 kids a day" at its San Juan unit and is planning a 17,000‑square‑foot teen center that will include vocational training. The speaker said the club charges families about "$15 a month" while the actual operating cost is closer to "$100 per kid per month," and thanked the board and city for ongoing support.
Speaking on the Pan‑American Round Table request, a representative explained the group has annually awarded two $1,000 scholarships to students recommended by counselors and requested $2,500 from the EDC to help fund this year’s awards. The representative introduced Gloria Can as an associate director involved with the group’s fundraising.
Representatives of Capable Kids described their programs for people with disabilities, including adaptive sports, life‑skills workshops and social events. Ivana Signs, identified in the meeting as the program and community outreach coordinator, said the organization serves "almost 6,000 members across the RGB," with about "372" participants coming from San Juan. She urged the board to consider sponsorship to support Capable Kids’ fundraising and outreach.
Each sponsorship motion was recorded and approved by the board; the meeting record shows votes in favor by members present and the motions were announced as passed. Board members expressed support for investments in programs the board said advance economic development by supporting families and workforce development.
The board’s next steps are administrative (processing the sponsorships and issuing acknowledgments); no additional action on the sponsorships was recorded at the meeting.
