Parents and staff warn of special‑education overcrowding and service gaps after consolidations

Rosio Sanchez, speaking on behalf of staff at Bennett Q and referencing multiple work orders dating to January 2024, said a leaking sink required daily buckets and that several special‑education classrooms are over capacity. She said RSP teachers and speech pathologists are functioning from shared or improvised spaces and that the school’s library faces repurposing to create classrooms.
Parent and community speakers (John Hughes, Mario Sanchez) said some special‑education classrooms were assigned 17 students where typical ratios call for far fewer, and that a lack of permanent teacher assignments and classroom readiness harmed students with high needs. Hughes asked the board to tour affected rooms and urged quicker redeployment of air‑conditioning units, classroom furniture and temporary modulars where needed.
Board members acknowledged the complaints and several trustees said they would follow up immediately. Trustee Joyce Randall asked for a formal report on the BenQ site plan and an explanation of whether library space would be permanently removed; Trustee Margaret Turner Evans called for expedited work orders for safety items (plumbing and HVAC). Superintendent Dr. Morris and staff pledged to investigate the specific work orders and return with corrective steps.
