Cummins asked the court to increase his salary by $4,971 and to raise each deputy’s pay by $2,017.50, which he said would amount to $9,006 total among the three positions for the next fiscal year. He told the court the changes would take effect in the July 2026 budget year if approved.
Members discussed the county’s recent coroner operating spending and state legislative activity affecting coroner pay. Court members noted the county had paid about $573.12 in coroner operating claims since last July and that the Coroners Association has lobbied for state-set minimum salaries by county size. One member said adopting incremental increases now could reduce future budget strain if the state eventually mandates higher pay.
Heather Brumley moved to approve the recommended salaries and Sandy Roof seconded the motion. The motion carried on a roll-call vote with all members present recorded as voting yes.
The salary changes will be included in the fiscal year 2026–27 budget and, according to the discussion, would not take effect until the new budget year beginning in July 2026.
