Bayonne Board of Education approves routine items; student representative previews sold-out homecoming

The Bayonne Board of Education convened Oct. 15 in the Alexander X Oconor Auditorium and approved routine minutes and reports, heard a student representative’s report on upcoming school events, and recorded an abstention on one personnel item.
A motion to approve the minutes was moved, seconded and carried by roll call. The board then approved the superintendent’s curriculum items A1–A5 and personnel items B1–B28; President Casayas abstained on item B3. The business administrator’s items C1–C13 were also moved, seconded and approved by roll call.
Miriam GED, the board’s student representative from Bayonne High School, outlined recent student-government activity and upcoming events. She said students attended a meeting at The College of New Jersey on Oct. 8 to prepare for North Jersey Council (NJC) elections, noting Bayonne High School is eligible to nominate one candidate and six students are running. She announced that homecoming, scheduled for Oct. 19 with an Old Hollywood theme, has sold out and that students must submit a signed contract before receiving tickets. "We are eager to make the school year unforgettable and enjoyable for all Bay High School students," Miriam GED said.
Miriam also described other planned activities: a tailgate announced Oct. 11 with neon or glow-in-the-dark accessories (ticket sales beginning Oct. 16), a pep rally featuring student games, and spirit week Oct. 21–25 with daily dress themes.
During public comment, Mr. Jean Woods raised a question about personnel item B8 and the posted security staff rate: "Does ‘unless otherwise indicated’ mean the $30 that was negotiated?" A board representative or staff member responded that the district’s posted security staff rate is $24 per hour and that any union contract would supersede that posted rate.
The board observed a moment of silence for former superintendent Paty Mcgean at the start of the meeting. After completing the agenda, a motion to adjourn carried by roll call and the meeting ended.
