Board approves resolution to discontinue classified positions amid budget shortfalls

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education voted 5-0 at a special meeting to adopt Resolution 68-2425, finalizing the discontinuance of classified employee positions at the end of the 2024–25 school year because of a lack of work or funds, Assistant Superintendent Melanie Jones said.
Jones told trustees the classified employees listed in Attachment A were notified of the district’s intent not to reemploy them for 2025–26 and stressed the personal impact of the cuts. "These are not just positions. They are dedicated professionals who have served our students, and our schools with commitment," Jones said, describing the action as a legally required step under the education code.
A trustee asked about the meaning of asterisks on the attachment; Jones explained that an asterisk indicates an employee retains reemployment rights and may be placed in a lower classification or offered a reduction in hours rather than a layoff. "All the names on this list that have an asterisk means that the person will still be employed with us, but they'll be in a different position or possibly the same position with fewer hours," she said.
Classified Director Evan Pal told the board the reductions are "primarily lack of funds," adding that declining enrollment and reduced site fundraising influence some positions but that funding shortfalls are the main driver. "A lot of the positions are also site-based so it has to do with ad fund donations and... enrollment going down does affect that," Pal said.
Board member Rachel Herd moved to approve the resolution; board member Laura Brat seconded. A roll call vote recorded Brat, Herd, Vanzy, Ordoy, and Clark voting yes; the motion passed 5-0.
The resolution finalizes notices already issued and does not itself name subsequent reassignments or recall decisions; Jones said staff will continue reviewing resignations and retirements and may restore individuals from the reemployment list as circumstances change.
