P Middle School showcases AVID, STEM projects and student leadership to district board

P Middle School faculty and students presented classroom programs, extracurricular activities and family-engagement efforts at the Lancaster School District board meeting. Principal Mr L mono opened the presentation and highlighted the school’s mission “to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness,” saying the school insists on rigor while cultivating relationships with students, staff and the community.

The school’s AVID coordinator (identified in the transcript as "Miss teach") told the board AVID (which the speaker described using the AVID acronym: writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and metacognition) has been implemented at the school since 2011 and provides scaffolding strategies and professional-development work for teachers. “AVID is the path to ensure that all of our students have the opportunity ... to be college and career ready,” the coordinator said.

Myra Flores, representing the math department, described adoption of the I‑Ready math curriculum and said teachers run two I‑Ready lessons per week and use interactive notebooks; she described a cross-curricular water-rocket project that had students calculate rocket heights as part of math–science collaboration. Carla Recker, a computer-science teacher, described long-term design projects using isometric and orthographic drawing and 3D CAD to create puzzle toys and said students also build physical computing projects using jumper wires, LEDs and simple circuits.

Rebecca Topper, the ASB director, summarized family-engagement events—Treats & Tech night, fall and winter festivals, and workshops for sixth‑grade families—and reported the school’s student-led blood drive collected 54 pints. Several students also spoke briefly about belonging and being supported by teams and coaches at the school.

Board members and the superintendent thanked P Middle School staff and students for the presentation and said they looked forward to upcoming district events such as the mass concert at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center and local robotics competitions. The board meeting then moved on to consent agenda and action items.
