Students, staff and board highlight HBCU fair, peer‑advocate grant and CTE opportunities

Student leaders from Bidwell Continuation High School updated the board on campus activities and achievements at the Sept. 11 meeting. Senior Isabella Epolito and junior Michaela Thomas said 11 students attended the HBCU fair at Deer Valley High School and that the school’s civic engagement class is making quilts and comfort bags for children in need as part of a community service project.
Board members and staff noted the district was selected as a peer‑demonstration site for a peer‑advocates program and that the program (recognized by the Children’s Partnership) brought a peer‑advocates grant to the district; staff said the district’s contracted grant writer helped secure that and additional grants (including a CalService grant and work with the CTE team on a Strong Workforce grant). Board members discussed exploring a more centralized approach to grant writing and using student internships in the technology department to refurbish obsolete laptops as a CTE opportunity.
The board applauded students’ improved attendance and honor‑roll recognitions and encouraged continued community engagement and focus‑group participation for the district’s community needs assessment.
