Gretna Arbor Society OKs Parade Spending, Schedules Plantings and Tree Giveaway

The Gretna Arbor Society Tree Board on April 14 approved funds for parade supplies, adjusted its spring planting schedule and set a series of community tree events for the coming months. The meeting took place at 7:18 p.m. in the Gretna Main Public Library Conference Room and concluded at 7:53 p.m.
Minutes of the March 10 meeting were approved in a motion by Angie Lauritsen and seconded by Dan Hansen. The board reported a budget balance of $20,103, which members cited as available to support upcoming outreach and planting activities.
The board moved its spring planting event to May 1 because of April weather conditions; John Wolken, secretary, will pick up trees at a nursery near Weston and Amy Nakai is coordinating planting locations within Gretna Crossing Park. The Arbor Day program is scheduled for April 24 at 2:30 p.m. at Falling Water Elementary School; the board plans to ask Mayor Evans to read the proclamation and will plant a tree on the school grounds at 12:30 p.m.
Organizers also set the annual Poster Contest award ceremony for Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Harvest Hills Elementary School. Amy Nakai secured gift-card donations from Walmart for first through third place; Marshall Jaros will donate the grand prize, Jim Keepers has offered additional funds, and a volunteer identified as Missy purchased medals and prepared award letters.
The board voted to provide money from its budget for supplies for the Gretna Days Parade, scheduled for July 26; the motion was made by Dan Hansen, seconded by Dave Kovar, and approved by the board. For its fall Tree Giveaway the board tentatively scheduled September 26 and informed the nursery it plans to purchase 125 trees; Amy Nakai will coordinate mulch with Hughes Tree Service and check on obtaining tree guards.
Amy Nakai reported she has worked with Josh from the City Code Enforcement team on the board’s role in evaluating trees. The city will inspect trees needing attention and send required notifications by email, the minutes state.
A motion to adjourn was made by Angie Lauritsen and seconded by Marshall Jaros; the meeting adjourned at 7:53 p.m. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2026.
