Prosser students showcase National History Day projects; adviser announces retirement

Students in the Prosser School District presented a series of National History Day projects tonight, and the board praised several who advanced to state-level competition.
Kyla Salier Smith, who introduced the group, said eight students qualified for state and highlighted a freshman, Enoch, who completed a documentary on the 1982 Warren County PCB protests under short time constraints. Students described their projects by name and grade: Bivana Torres said she made an individual documentary on the Bonus Army march; Lionus Macy discussed a performance on the Amistad trials; Abraham Aoyo said his group project examined Prohibition; Carly O’Brien described a project on Gertrude Ederle’s swim across the English Channel; Tatum Hall presented an individual performance on the Salem witch trials; Hannah Schmeck and Sophia Martinez spoke about a group performance on the printing press.
Board members applauded the students’ work and wished them luck at state competition. After the presentations, the board and community members publicly recognized Smith and heard an announcement that she plans to retire; trustees and attendees thanked her for decades of service to the program.
The board’s recognition of student achievement came early on the agenda, and members encouraged continued community support for programs that expose students to historical research and public presentation. The district’s next regular meeting is scheduled for April 22 at 6 p.m.
