Chilkoot Corridor working group asks Haines Borough Assembly to add community (non‑agency) members

The Chilkoot Corridor Working Group voted by voice to recommend that the Haines Borough Assembly appoint additional non‑agency members to the working group, a change members said would broaden community input.

The motion, moved by the group chair and seconded by a committee member, was made during new business and passed after brief discussion. Clerk Mike said the recommendation can be placed on the assembly agenda; the next assembly meeting date provided during the meeting was April 14.

Members who supported the recommendation said the working group currently includes many agency representatives and would benefit from more community voices. The chair, who announced she must step down because of increasing work demands, said she would still help the group where possible but asked the group to identify a successor.

Gwen was nominated to run the meeting if needed, but several agency members including Brad from state parks said they did not feel it was appropriate for government officials who manage use areas to serve as chair. The group discussed whether additional appointments should come from the tourism board or assembly and agreed the assembly is the appropriate body to make formal appointments.

The motion text made on the record asked the assembly to appoint additional non‑agency members to the Chilkoot Corridor Working Group; it was seconded and approved by a voice vote. Clerk Mike asked that the motion be sent to the clerk's office to be placed on the assembly agenda for consideration.

The working group agreed to continue planning and to return to remaining agenda items at the next meeting.
