Board approves emergency roof work, gym floor refinish and other maintenance purchases

The Clay County Board of Education approved several facilities and maintenance actions on April 9, including an emergency roof project, gym floor restoration, equipment purchases and authorizing the solicitation of bids for paving.
Board members approved an emergency repair/replacement for the roof of the district’s old auditorium after staff reported storm damage that had peeled back a large portion of the roof. District staff said the immediate repair estimate was about $7,500 and that insurance would cover that amount; trustees treated the purchase as an emergency to expedite work and maintain safe, dry storage and building envelope conditions. Mr. West moved to approve the emergency action; Ms. Weed seconded and the motion passed.
The board also approved refinishing the gym floor at Horace Springs School, accepting a low bid from Praters. Staff described gouges in the floor that will require sanding to bare wood, repainting and a water-based clear coat to preserve striping and reduce future color change. Trustees approved the Praters bid following a motion by Mr. West.
Trustees approved purchase of a new mower from Copeland's Lawn Supply (quote number two) on a motion by Mr. Ashlock, seconded by Mr. Sherrill; board members asked that maintenance staff be the only operators of the new equipment.
Finally, the board authorized staff to request bids for a grading and paving project at the district K–8 campus identified as Solana (materials also referenced it as Sonna/Saluda K-8). Staff said the site is the highest priority among the district’s facilities and that bids may return in June. The board’s motion to solicit bids passed without committing to a contract if bids exceed budget.
What’s next: Staff will coordinate emergency roof contracting and schedule gym-floor work, finalize mower procurement, and issue bid documents for paving. If bid results exceed budget, the board said it will not be obliged to proceed.
