Leonard Buckner, director of enrollment and placement services, told the district advisory council that applications for elementary signature programs open Dec. 5 and run through Jan. 19. Buckner said the district runs seven to eight elementary signature-program sites (environmental education, fine arts, technology and other themes) and that if applications exceed openings the district will hold a virtual lottery; the tentative date for a required lottery is Feb. 18, 2026.
Buckner explained program logistics and counselled families to use ARIES online pre-enrollment and to contact the Language Assessment Center (LAC) for questions about dual-immersion transitions. He said some dual-immersion students continue into middle-school programs (examples cited: Arrowview and Serrano) but parents should verify placements with the LAC because sections and capacity vary by site.
On magnet and middle-school lotteries, Jessica Vile described the screening criteria the district uses for three magnet middle schools: district residency, a district benchmark (NW A) at roughly the 35th percentile and a CASP score of 2 or higher in ELA and math, plus reviews of attendance and behavior. Vile said lottery drawings for middle-school magnets will occur in January and placements should be known by March.
Buckner answered questions about wait lists, sibling priority and employee-address exceptions. He said families will be notified by mail, email and ParentSquare and that eligible students placed via priority rules do not need to enter the lottery.
