Expanded Learning program reports rising enrollment, supper at all sites and expanded STEAM offerings

Anne Pearson, director of Expanded Learning, told the District Advisory Council that San Bernardino City Unified’s EXL program serves thousands of students and continues to expand services. Pearson said the program currently enrolls “over 17,000 students” and that more recent counts are “closer to the 20,000 mark.”
She described program hours (sunrise and CAPS after-school blocks), a required state-aligned enrichment block that includes STEAM, music and clubs, and a 30-day expanded component supported by ELOP funding used for intersession academic camps, enrichment and field trips. Pearson said supper (not just a snack) is now offered at all participating schools and that EXL partners with nutrition services and other district departments to support programming.
Pearson highlighted measurable indicators—Panorama sense-of-belonging surveys, academic success metrics, family-engagement event counts and chronic-absenteeism improvements linked to program participation. The director also previewed training and vendor oversight (annual symposiums and vendor trainings) and asked families to complete a short survey via QR code to help shape future offerings.
Questions from DAC members included whether middle-school athletes receive supper (Pearson said supper is offered but not all athletes choose to eat immediately) and the inclusion of specialized programs for SDC/moderate-severe students.
