The board voted to sponsor two community events after extended discussion on policy and direct student benefit. For the California Association of Asian and Pacific Islander Leaders and Education Capital conference (CAP 2026), trustees clarified that the district would pay registration for students attending the conference and the board's sponsorship ($2,000 motion by Mr. Tilman, seconded by Mrs. Alexander) would support the conference itself; the motion carried.
Trustees also considered a sponsorship request from Friends of Santa Claus, Inc. for the 2025 Christmas Tree Lane event. After discussion about recognition and program benefits to families in need, the board moved and passed a sponsorship at the level proposed in the motion record (motion by Miss Medina; second by Mr. Tilman).
During CAP discussion some trustees raised questions about the district's sponsorship policy and whether sponsorships should demonstrate direct, tangible benefits to students; supporters said student panels and scholarship opportunities at the conference meet that threshold. The board asked staff to explore sending additional students, parents or staff to maximize student benefit when feasible.
