County staff used the May 12 budget work session to close several outstanding clarifications and prepare the FY27 budget for final approval next week.
Vanetta Van Clee said staff determined that the library is in the same contribution cohort as the county under the Familia Act, so the library will not be required to make contributions until Jan. 1, 2028. Joyce Sapp, deputy director of finance, explained the circuit court’s request to fund an hourly position: the court had been using contract-services funds and the adjustment as presented would be net-neutral, reflecting a $7.53 net difference.
A commissioner raised the sheriff’s office "top of grade" pay item; Vanetta Van Clee noted a memo from the sheriff outlining a proposed methodology is included in the packet and commissioners indicated they were comfortable having the methodology approved or allowing the sheriff to speak further if desired. Deputy directors asked staff to recognize a previously unaccepted negative '173' appeal from the circuit court in part of the budget; staff sought commissioner consensus to include that appeal and commissioners agreed.
Vanetta Van Clee closed by saying staff will present the approved budget for a final vote next week. Commissioners indicated they were generally content with the fine-tuning items and the session adjourned.
