Springfield to livestream random public lotteries for CTE admissions; tentative dates set

Assistant Superintendent Jose Escobano said the state asked for minor clarifications to the district’s previously approved policy; the committee approved the amended language. Escobano described the operational plan for admissions to Putnham and Aspire vocational programs: the district will prepare a completely random, public lottery that will be livestreamed and documented. "We are preparing a completely random lottery... we are clicking the button on April 8th or April 9th," Escobano said, adding that the system will select students up to available seats and that the public lottery will be announced a week in advance.
Escobano and staff said families who win seats will receive immediate electronic notification; waitlisted families will be contacted subsequently. The district tentatively anticipates releasing assignments for non‑Putnham/Aspire applicants on April 15 to allow lottery results to cascade through additional choice lists.
Committee members asked about multilingual learners and exceptional learners; Escobano said state law does not permit exceptions to the required random lottery process. Committee members and staff agreed to finalize logistics and public communications before the livestreamed event.
The committee approved the amended CTE admissions policy and directed staff to return with final lottery dates and communications plans.
